An Urgent Phone Call? Pause, Hang Up, and Call Back
A calm plan for checking unexpected calls—even when the caller sounds official or familiar.

You do not have to decide whether an unexpected caller is trustworthy while they are still talking. Ending the call gives you time to check the story using a number you already trust. That pause is useful whether someone claims to be a relative, a government representative, or your bank.
What should make me pause?
Pressure, secrecy, threats, and a sudden request for money or account information deserve a pause. A caller may describe an emergency or say you must act before anyone else finds out. You can say, “I need to check this independently,” and end the conversation. You do not owe an unexpected caller an explanation.
Can I trust the number shown on my phone?
A displayed number or familiar name is not enough to establish who is calling. Use a number from your own records, an official statement, or the organization’s established website to call back. Do not rely on a number the caller gives you as the way to verify their own story.
What if the voice sounds like a family member?
Treat the story as something to verify, even if the voice sounds familiar. Call that person using their saved number. If you cannot reach them, try another trusted relative. A family plan for checking emergencies can help everyone slow down and avoid making a payment under pressure.
What should I do while I check?
Keep the request on hold. Do not send money, reveal passwords, or read out an account security code. Write down what the caller claimed, then discuss it with someone you trust. A real emergency can still be checked through independent contacts; refusing to stay on the line does not prevent you from helping.
How can family members make this easier?
Make it normal to ask for a second opinion without embarrassment. Keep a short list of trusted numbers rather than trying to remember them during a stressful conversation. The goal is a simple habit: an unexpected urgent request gets an independent check before you act.
